Yalta

About Yalta

Yalta and its picturesque surrounding area are widely known in the whole world as a top class climatic health resort. Yalta is loved by all and in any season. The city is comfortably located on the South Coast of the Crimea and all the tourist routes lead to Yalta.

Facing the sun, washed by caressing warm waves of the Black Sea, securely protected by the Crimean Mountains from severe northern winds Greater Yalta is always full of charm.
Greater Yalta is a narrow coastal strip stretching nearly 80 kilometers where in green parks and gardens hide resort towns: Livadia, Alupka, Simeiz, Gurzuf, Massandra and the beauty itself Yalta – the center of this popular resort.

Places of interest in Yalta

Yalta itself is interesting by its unique combination of architectural monuments integrated in mountainous landscape. There is lots of beautiful (though not always in good condition) buildings built in the end of the XIX and beginning of the XX centuries. Yalta was the favorite place of leisure for Russian aristocracy that followed to the South Coast of the Crimea after the Tsar’s family who set up here their estates Oreanda and Livadia.

The following are among the most interesting places in Yalta:
* the city embankment renovated in 2003—2004;
* the Armenian church built by the architect Ter-Mikalyan replicating the church of St. Ripsime in Echmiadzin; it was painted inside by the outstanding Armenian artist Vardges Surenyans (Zagorodnaya street)

Salubrious climate of Yalta

Yalta is a seaside climatic resort. Climatologists call Yalta’s climate Mediterranean since here like on the coasts of the Mediterranean winter precipitations significantly prevail over summer precipitations and the summer is hot and dry.
Scientists single out two groups of natural factors on which peculiarities of climatic situations of the South Coast depend.
The number of sunshine hours in Yalta varies from 1944 to 2555 per year, which is on average from 5-6 to 7 hours daily. Thanks to this and significant distance to the sun, which is inherent to such geographic latitude, in clear summer days the surface of the South Coast receives a great amount of solar energy per day (25-30 biological doses).

Beaches in Yalta

Previously beaches in Yalta were constantly destroyed by the stormy sea. It literally “licked off” sand and pebble washing away ledge rock of the coast. On the other hand the beaches were ruined by “aggressive” landslides. After multiple surveys on movement of beach pebble under various directions of the sea waves a number of anti-landslide concrete stacks and embankment were constructed along the beaches. Trenches were dug in the seabed and piers were erected. Yalta’s sea shore became like a giant comb. Spaces between piers were filled with crushed stone. In the course of time the sea made it round and smooth. And that’s how numerous beaches in Yalta came about.
The Municipal beach is near the hotel “Oreanda”. The sea there is not muddy but not interesting either. It may suit those who swim for 5 minutes and then all they do is sunbathe (in other words snorkeling is not interesting there). There are many cafes, bars, benches and sun beds. Hang-gliders and water scooters are available for rent.

How to get to Yalta

To Yalta by plane
This is the fastest way to get to Yalta.
The flight lasts for about 2 hours from Moscow and 1 hour from Kiev.
But … just one little thing, unfortunately, there is no airport in Yalta!
By the way it is not by chance, since it’s very difficult to build a several kilometers long runway on a mountain. Instead, by plane you can get to Simferopol from where you can get to Yalta in 2-3 hours.
So, if you decide to travel by plane you need to buy tickets to Simferopol.

To Yalta by train
This is the most popular transport for the majority of holiday makers. You should buy tickets beforehand and preferably 2-3 weeks prior to your trip
